Many of the previous works proposed BS switching ON/OFF strategies based on the underlying network traffic ( ye2019drag, ; gao2019user, ; wu2021deep, ). The core idea is to capture the continuous state of traffic demand at the BS and, accordingly, take the switching on/off decision for the BS.
The proliferation of User Equipment ( UE) drives this energy demand, urging 5G deployments to seek more energy-efficient methodologies. In this work, we propose SmartMME, as a pivotal solution aimed at optimizing Base Station (BS) energy usage.
The switching on/off logic performs the following tasks to manage the mmWave BS s and UEs: Switch off IDLE mmWave BS: SmartMME checks the IDLE time of each mmWave BS and switches off those that are not connected to any UEs.
Due to lightning strikes, blown transformers, auto accidents, human theft and even rodents, power outages of BSs are actually much more than expected. Near one third of the BSs ever experienced power outages lasting for over 10 hours .
In this chapter, we proposed an optimal backup power allocation framework for BSs, ShiftGuard, to help the mobile network operators reduce their backup power cost in shifting to the 5G network and beyond.
Two backup power allocation strategies. Strategy II exploits the multiplexing gain of different power demand curves at the two areas, where P stands for peak power demand of the BS and c represents the allocated capacity of backup batteries.
