Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can be utilized to provide three types of reserves: spinning, non-spinning, and supplemental reserves. Spinning reserves refer to the reserve power that is already online and synchronized with the grid. It is the first line of defense during a grid disturbance and can be dispatched almost instantaneously.
The ever-increasing demand for electricity can be met while balancing supply changes with the use of robust energy storage devices. Battery storage can help with frequency stability and control for short-term needs, and they can help with energy management or reserves for long-term needs.
For example, a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity will have a storage duration of four hours. Cycle life/lifetime is the amount of time or cycles a battery storage system can provide regular charging and discharging before failure or significant degradation.
