Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) have reached a mature level by providing clean and uninterruptible power to the sensitive loads in all grid conditions. Generally UPS system provides regulated sinusoidal output voltage, with low total harmonics distortion (THD), and high input power factor irrespective of the changes in the grid voltage.
A traditional uninterruptible power supply may have a lower initial purchase price, but costs more to operate than a modular UPS solution for several reasons.
Both uninterruptible power supplies support a load of 96 kW, which equates to 120 kVA at a power factor of 0.8. The traditional or legacy UPS installation comprises two 120 kVA modules operating in a 120 kVA N+N redundant configuration.
Most of the energy consumed by a UPS is the result of switching losses in the inverter and transformers. To mitigate these losses, energy-efficient UPS systems employ a power management system that precisely controls every pulse of the switching cycle, optimizing the inverter's switching for specific load types and load levels.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies with hybrid storage system Uninterruptible power supplies with batteries as storage source provides good performance during grid interruption and blackout by suppling instant backup energy. However batteries cannot provide backup for a very long period of time and have limited charge/discharge cycles.
But if the UPS is operating at a lower capacity, as almost all do, the equation changes. This is because a UPS loses energy in two ways – proportionally and fixed. 4 Proportional losses occur in the form of heat-dissipation and are directly tied to the size of the load.
