As expected, as price decreases and system life increases, the LCOE decreases. A 30 year system at an installed cost of $2.25/Wp–$3.25/Wp with a zero interest loan at the other assumptions has an LCOE of $0.10/kWh–$0.15/kWh, which is able to compete with grid prices at $0.080/kWh–$0.11/kWh.
Additionally, the cost of solar PV power generation was CNY5.6–15.1 kWh −1 in 2000, which fell to CNY0.29–0.79 kWh −1 in 2018, with an average annual decrease of CNY0.28–0.75 kWh −1 (Fig. 1). Technological progress sheds light on less expensive and more commercially viable solar systems, and increases the competitiveness of the solar PV market.
The costs of solar PV projects include power generation, predevelopment, construction, and operation and maintenance costs, as well as the discount rate of fixed-term considerations, the depreciation of fixed assets, and/or the residual value of assets (equation (1) 63):
The price of electricity purchased is the electricity retail price (the normal electricity price instead of the peak or valley price) of 10-kV I&C-distributed PV in various cities published by the NDRC in 2018.
Today, wind is the lowest cost energy source, followed by solar energy. If we forecast pricing to 2030, it is expected that the price of Solar energy will fall another 30% from 2020 pricing, and the cost of wind power should fall another 11% from 2020 pricing as well.
7. Conclusions As the solar photovoltaic (PV) matures, the economic feasibility of PV projects is increasingly being evaluated using the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) generation in order to be compared to other electricity generation technologies. A review of methodology and key assumptions of LCOE for solar PV was performed.
