The battery management system (BMS) monitors the battery and possible fault conditions, preventing the battery from situations in which it can degrade, fade in capacity, or even potentially harm the user or surrounding environment.
Connectivity is necessary within the BMS for transferring analog and digital signals. Analog cell sensing signals, such as low voltage and temperature, are usually processed into digital signals by a Cell Management Controller (CMC) and shared to a master battery management controller (BMC).
Centralized BMS has the advantages of low cost, compact structure, and high reliability. It is common in small battery systems that they have lower capacitance and lower total voltage battery packs.
BMS also includes the part that manages high voltage called HVU, but it has been omitted because it is beyond the scope of this article. The primary function of the BMU is to communicate with other ECUs/VCUs through CAN, process the data collected from CSC, and charge and discharge management.
The P connection, or discharge port, in a BMS plays a crucial role in managing the battery pack's power output. Connected to the battery pack's negative terminal, the P connection allows for the controlled discharge of energy through the BMS's protected output.
