Utilizing millimeter wave spectrum to build 5G base stations is an inevitable trend . However, communication links in the millimeter wave frequency range have serious transmission loss issues, and the transmission distance of millimeter wave signals is very short.
Based on this scheme, a novel embedded dual band shared-aperture base station antenna array is constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, which consists of one sub-6 GHz element and four mmWave elements. The distance between mmWave elements is dl = dw = 7 mm. Compared with the traditional Fig. 3.
The antennas mentioned above are dedicated for the 5G mobile devices but cannot be adopted for base station applications because of their low gain. Consequently, in this work, we propose a novel antenna array suitable for 5G mm-wave base station applications.
Here, we propose a large-scale 2-bit millimeter-wave programmable metasurface to build an integrated smart base station framework for 6G communications. The meta-array is composed of 30 × 30 meta-elements, each with two embedded positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes.
The independent and reconfigurable capabilities in manipulating the propagation directions of four streams have facilitated the smart communication of the new types of base stations. We summarize the properties of the proposed beamforming system in Table 1.
