A study commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency is monitoring the performance of three microgrid projects in Amsterdam and one in Olst. Microgrids connect a neighborhood to a localized energy network that operates independently of the mains supply, to share local energy between households.
Vattenfall and the international energy storage company Return have entered into an agreement under which Vattenfall will operate and optimise a large-scale battery park with a capacity of 50 megawatts for eight years. The battery park will be located in Waddinxveen in southern Netherlands and is planned to be operational in the first half of 2026.
The company is aiming to have 1GWp of solar and 2GWh of energy storage in the Netherlands by 2028, alongside EV charging points via subsidiary PowerGo. The solar and storage project in Wannepervee combines 28MWp of solar with a 52MWh BESS. It is developing a 12MWh project near another of its solar PV plants, in Emmen.
The Netherlands is some way behind with a current total of 6%, but there is room for optimism. Optimized properly, microgrids could play a vital part in supporting efforts to transition to renewable energy systems and meet climate targets.
