Thermal energy storage means heating or cooling a medium to use the energy when needed later. In its simplest form, this could mean using a water tank for heat storage, where the water is heated at times when there is a lot of energy, and the energy is then stored in the water for use when energy is less plentiful.
Thermal storage technology plays an important role in improving the flexibility of the global energy storage system, achieving stable output of renewable energy, and improving energy utilization efficiency.
Thermal storage systems collect excess thermal energy during periods of low demand, usually from renewable sources such as solar or wind, and balance energy consumption between day and night. TES storage solutions include storage of ice, water, soil, or bedrock through boreholes and deep underground water sources. So why do we need thermal storage?
There are three major thermochemical, latent, and sensible modes in a thermal energy storage system. Generally, the heat is stored in moderate heat, which helps to increase the containers' heat. Storage of hot water, underground thermal energy storage, and rock-filled storage are examples of thermal energy storage systems.
Thermal energy storage materials for chemical heat storage Chemical heat storage systems use reversible reactions which involve absorption and release of heat for the purpose of thermal energy storage. They have a middle range operating temperature between 200 °C and 400 °C.
The thermal energy can be stored for a few hours or days, for example in heat storage tanks, or for several months in large pits or other storage facilities.
